Fun Activities for Children to Nature Their Skills
Children are naturally curious. They literally love to find out how things work, especially if the process involves a lot of fun and hands-on projects. With this in mind, it is important to enable a curiosity about science, technology, engineering and math (now commonly known as STEM). STEM is being implemented a lot more in today’s education system, so as to prepare children for an even more technology driven society. Here are a couple of fun activities for children that will definitely help them learn a thing or two about Science and Technology.
Make a pendulum painting
This activity mixes art with science by teaching children a lesson about gravity while creating a painting. Hang a plastic cup, using string, on broomstick suspended in between two chairs. Poke a hole at the bottom of the cup, then put drawing paper on the floor, below the cup. Fill the cup with some paint. Push the cup to let it swing over the paper. As the cup swings, it drips the paint onto the paper below.
As the pendulum swings back and forth, explain how gravity pulls the paint to the paper. Also explain how gravity makes the pendulum swing back and forth, creating smaller and smaller circles on the paper.
Demonstrate surface tension on a coin
This will demonstrate how surface tension works. Take a coin and an eyedropper. Carefully place drops of water on the coin, watching how the water will not spill over when it accumulates. Measure the number of drops the coin can take before it finally overflows.
An alternative would be to place different sized droplets of water on wax paper, then move the drops across the paper by blowing them using a straw. This experiment will also show the concept of the bonding properties of water molecules.
Design items using the simple physics app
The app teaches children how physics works, using a game-style concept. After a demonstration of how to play, the player builds a series of objects. The structures built must adhere to the size and weight requirements. The builder must also stay within a given budget. If the player builds a solid structure using the specified budget, they gain points.
The app is available for the Android and iOS platforms.
Play with legos using lego challenge cards
This is a great way to create engineering aspirations in children. The Lego Challenge cards provide a variety of tasks that allow kids to tackle design problems using Lego blocks. The tasks could range from building something that flies, to building a triangle with the same length on both sides. These Lego Challenge Cards are available online of you look for them. All in all, children can learn and have fun at the same time. Matter of fact, they are bound to remember the lessons learnt, simply because they had fun doing it.
